2016年7月28日，英国自然出版集团发布了自然指数2016新星榜(Nature Index 2016 Rising Stars)。山东师范大学表现抢眼，进入全球百优行列，位居56名，倍受关注。
自然指数2016新星榜旨在展示那些高质量科研论文增长最显著的国家和机构，排序依据的是科研机构在2012～2015年间对自然指数WFC指数(weighted fractional count,加权分数式计量)的提升值。在进入全球前100名科研机构中，中国有40所，美国有11所，英国有9所，德国8有所，无疑中国在全球高质量科研学术论文的贡献中表现突出。
2015年，山东师范大学在自然出版集团优选的68种自然科学杂志上共发表高水平学术论文33篇，WFC指数值为25.33，2012～2015年WFC指数的提升值为16.5。按照2012～2015年WFC指数的提升值，山东师范大学在全球排名前100所科研机构中位列56，在国内40所科研机构中排名32，是山东省高校及科研单位中唯一一所入围全球前100的机构。国内进入全球前100的机构中，师范大学共有6所，分别是华东师范大学（48.35）、西南大学（26.99）、北京师范大学（17.51）、陕西师范大学（17.02）、山东师范大学（16.5）、南京师范大学（9.79）。
自然指数是英国自然出版集团在考虑学科覆盖范围的基础上扩展选取了全球引文数较高的68种自然科学期刊，比如《Science》、《Cell》等（自然指数68种期刊列表链接：http://www.natureindex.com/faq#methodology4），用以追踪科研工作者在优选科学期刊上的论文贡献度，表征机构高质量科研产出水平的评价指标，在国际学术界享有盛誉，具有很大影响力。
